How This All Happened

September 15, 2008

Now that we have your attention and you have seen (we hope) the apparel offerings and designs, and to extend beyond the “about” page…..let’s talk about how LuuLay began.

Yes, I really was in college (NO WAY!) and yes, I really did have a writing assignment that kind of spawned this whole company. My writing professor, the ever-awesome Dr. Daniel Sklar, asked us to take two completley incongruous words and put them together. In a sentence. And make it work.

So, I sat there with my pencil and my paper and thought long and hard about it. I was really not in the creative mood that day, and I certainly didn’t feel like thinking of any words. But, I just started doodling and then I was looking at my high-heeled boots. So I wrote it down. And, of course, I love butterflies, so I wrote that down, too. There. Two words. Completely incongrous. Together on paper. Butterflies and high-heeled boots. Now what? I don’t think I ever made a sentence out of it.

I took the idea home to my apartment in Beverly, MA where I lived with my brother and some friends. My brother, the artist who happened to have a degree in Illustration, saw my idea and kind of developed this obsession with it. Perhaps the visual was too enticing for his right brain to pass up. And from then, he just sketched and sketched various butterflies wearing these kickass boots. Eventually, the butterfly started to take on a life of her own and the theme was prominent in a lot of his future work.

By the way, this was in the late 90’s.

Fast forward to the new millenium. After many years of various jobs, my brother and I really wanted to launch a graphic tee company of some sort. But we didn’t know how or what to do. And then it dawned on us…..the butterfly! Right! Yes! The butterfly! And…..well, that’s all we had.

I thought a little bit more on the subject and literally, the light bulb went off instantly. BUGS. All different kinds of bugs! Wearing all different kinds of boots! And…..well, that’s all we had.

I started looking all different orders, classes and kinds of bugs. Dragonflies! Mantids! Spiders! It was all pretty exciting. Who knew that bugs could be so much fun?

That’s when the naming started. And we just took it and ran with it. And yes, that’s all we had and really, it’s all we needed.

I don’t know about you, but I love every single one of them.

What’s In A Name?

Our company name stems from our starter girl, Lucy Lepidoptera. We took the first syllable of each of her names (Lu and Le) and got creative with the spelling and came up with LuuLay. It was really that simple.

It only made sense to us to name our company after the idea that started it all.

Coming Soon!

Our website is due to launch any moment now. As much as we’ve been saying that, we really mean it. These girls will be coming out of hiding very soon. Stay tuned!
