From the Idea Box

December 22, 2008

LuuLay has some good stuff planned for 2009. You probably already saw the colored version of Annie and now we’d like to show you a different approach to the ladies, straight from the idea box that all started this LuuLay venture.

Annie get your gun!

Annie get your gun!

Sketch of Annie striking a pose and looking quite mean.

She's classy, but you really don't want to cross her.

She's classy, but you really don't want to cross her.

And here’s our classy Madeline, gorgeous as ever, but you just know she’s got a bit of…..bite to her.

You’ll be seeing lots of different versions of the ladies in ‘09. Of course, the tried and true originals will be available, fret not. But the gals are taking on a whole new look in ‘09 and will appear in various mediums, not just shirts. We have a lot in store for the New York Comic Con, too so keep watching this space for updates and teasers as we move closer to February!

Letting the Cat Out of the Bag: Coming in 2009 (Part 1)

December 18, 2008

Meet Annie!

Meet Annie!

We’re letting the cat out of the bag. Or, in this case, the scorpion. We’d like you to meet Annie, a distant cousin of Adalaide Arthropoda and she’ll be coming to luulay.com sometime in 2009! Just look at her! She’s the sharp shooter of the bunch and definitely the one you wouldn’t want to mess with. She’s quick with the draw and has one heck of an aim. Keep watching this space for updates as to when Annie will be available on luulay.com!

But What Does It Mean?

December 10, 2008

As I do most everyday, I was wearing my LuuLay hooded long sleeve while I was out and about running errands (also, today I was wearing Harriet Hymenoptera, the wasp!)

I was at a local retailer purchasing a new hair brush and when I got to the checkout to pay for said brush, the cashier looked at me and asked “So, what does your shirt mean?”

She had a perplexed look on her face, and also a smile.

I smiled at her and, kind of not sure what to say (as I wear a lot of graphic tees and forget which one I am wearing at any given time), looked down at my shirt and said “Oh, her?”

The cashier responded “Yeah, what does it mean?”

You know, for once I was actually at a loss for words. What does it mean? I never really had a philosophical conversation about The Entophilezzz! because there isn’t much to get, at least, I don’t think. They’re winged creatures wearing boots that look……….sexy, fun, stylish, playful. Call me simple, but that’s all I ever thought about it. However, in a consumer world, we purchase things that mean something to us. Whatever we buy, it either has to be useful, meaningful, fun, logical, needed, wanted, or just really friggen cool. But yeah, Harriet…..the meaning. Hmmm……

I smiled at the cashier and said to her “it means fun” and, to her, that answer seemed acceptable. She nodded and giggled and it was if a light bulb went off over her head. Ah, FUN!

When the CM and I started this business, all we ever really thought about was fun. Sure, there were some other ideas in there, like which shirts to use, how to imprint, how do we make these characters look and so on. But the bottom line is (and this is on our about page, too) we believe in fun.

Call it a cliche, but no lie, LuuLay started as two completely incongruous ideas that we somehow found a way to make congruent and thought graphic t-shirts and apparel were a good medium for our ideas. And all we ever wanted to do with said ideas was have fun.

So, what does it mean?

I believe the answer is relative, but yeah, fun is good to me.

American Apparel News

December 9, 2008

This economy certainly has people shaking in their boots (ha, boots!) and, despite the woes, some companies aren’t doing half bad. American Apparel is amongst the contenders on the list.

We print on American Apparel t-shirts because, well, they are awesome.

According to this CNN article, Marshal Cohen, a chief retail analyst with NPD Group chalks it up to value over brand:

“If [you] buy a $250 pair of jeans and $50 blouse from Guess, [you] can buy a camisole for $15 at American Apparel,” Cohen said.

American Apparel also has one up on the competition because their apparel is USA-made.

In related news, American Apparel’s sales in stores open for more than 12 months increased by 6 percent.

Roller skating + LuuLay = Fun!

December 8, 2008

If you’re in or around the Hudson Valley area this Sunday, December 14th, then you should come to Hyde Park Roller Magic at 12:30pm to not only skate, but meet us LuuLay folk live and in person!

Hyde Park Roller Magic is hosting a holiday craft fair and while we don’t have crafts per se, we have t-shirts and hoodies featuring The Entophilezzz! cast of characters!

We will be peddling our goodies at a discounted rate! So they will be cheaper than their online counterparts AND there is no shipping charge!

Did we mention the whole bit about roller skating?

There will also be a raffle in the mix (yes, there is a LuuLay shirt IN the raffle!) and the raffle proceeds will benefit St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, something near and dear to our hearts, so it’s all for a good cause.

So, if you’re close by (or just feel like taking a trip!) come to Hyde Park Roller Magic on Sunday, December 14th from 12:30-4 and be sure to come say hello to us!
